- Lahore experiences a surge in contagious conjunctivitis cases, causing strain on healthcare resources.
- Virus spreads rapidly through various transmission routes.
- Experts stress strict preventive measures and hygiene during this rainy season.
Lahore is facing a concerning surge in cases of conjunctivitis, commonly known as ‘pink eye,’ causing alarm throughout the city. This highly contagious eye infection has rapidly spread across various neighborhoods, resulting in a significant influx of patients seeking medical attention.
With over five hundred individuals seeking treatment in hospitals daily, Lahore’s healthcare system is under immense strain. Medical experts have identified the culprit as viral conjunctivitis and are warning of further transmission if preventive measures are not rigorously followed.
Patients afflicted with this infection report painful symptoms, including redness, eye swelling, and excessive tearing, heightening concerns about the outbreak’s severity. The virus is spreading rapidly, not only through direct contact but also through airborne particles during casual conversations.
Ophthalmologist Professor Asad Aslam stresses the urgent need for preventive actions, emphasizing that the virus can easily spread through contact with contaminated surfaces, close proximity to infected individuals, and even ordinary conversations. He advises the use of protective eyewear, immediate isolation of bedding and utensils, and extreme caution to prevent further transmission.
Furthermore, Professor Aslam underscores the importance of stringent hygiene practices to halt the virus’s spread. The virus can persist on surfaces for extended periods, posing a significant risk if an infected individual touches their eye and subsequently contacts other surfaces or individuals.
Experts note that this eye infection is particularly prevalent during the rainy season, underscoring the need for vigilance and strict adherence to hygiene guidelines among Lahore residents.
