Leopard sighted at major university in Islamabad, campus closed

A leopard sighting inside the International Islamic University Islamabad led the university administration to shut down all blocks and seek help from wildlife officials and police.

A university spokesperson confirmed that the animal was seen moving through bushes on the campus, which caused fear among students.

Following the incident, the administration immediately closed all academic and administrative units and called in the wildlife department and police to manage the situation. The spokesperson said the university will remain closed until the leopard is safely captured.

Teams from Islamabad Wildlife reached the campus and began a search operation. During the search, signs confirming the leopard’s presence were found. As a safety measure, the teams continued patrolling the area and placed traps to secure the animal.

The spokesperson appealed to the public to stay calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and cooperate with authorities involved in the operation.

In a separate statement, the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board said it is closely monitoring the reported sighting at the university. The board explained that leopards naturally inhabit Margalla Hills National Park and are known for their adaptability.

According to scientific research, a leopard’s territory can span 20 to 30 square kilometers, and their movement usually increases at night. As a result, occasional movement into nearby areas can happen.

The board noted that leopards in this region have adjusted to human presence and emphasized that people also need to understand leopard behavior and practice responsible coexistence. It added that there is no need for panic at this stage, as relevant teams are alert and coordinating with concerned authorities.
