The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Administration opened the spillways of Rawal Dam on Saturday morning after the reservoir’s water level reached a critical point following continuous monsoon rainfall in the federal capital.
According to the Deputy Commissioner Islamabad, the water level at Rawal Dam climbed to 1,748.30 feet, leading authorities to open the spillways at 6:00 AM on Saturday. The move was taken to safely release excess water and reduce the risk of flooding.
The decision follows several days of heavy rainfall, which has sharply increased water inflows into the reservoir. Rawal Dam is a major source of water supply for both Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

On the instructions of the Deputy Commissioner, all concerned departments, including rescue and emergency services, have been placed on high alert to deal with any situation that may arise due to the controlled release of water.
The ICT Administration has advised residents to stay away from Rawal Dam, rivers, nullahs and seasonal streams, as water levels in these areas may rise quickly after the spillways are opened.
Parents have also been urged to keep children away from water channels and flood-prone locations to avoid any accidents.
Officials have warned the public not to gather near waterways or attempt to cross flooded roads and streams, as fast-moving monsoon water can become dangerous within a short time. Citizens have been asked to follow official instructions and cooperate with the local administration until weather conditions improve.
Pakistan is currently experiencing an active monsoon season, with heavy rainfall causing urban flooding and raising water levels in dams and rivers across different parts of the country. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and have appealed to the public to remain alert.
