Mukesh Ambani plans to build world’s largest AI Data center

Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Group is planning to establish what could potentially become the world’s largest data center, aiming to tap into the surging demand for artificial intelligence (AI) services.

Reports suggest that Ambani is acquiring advanced AI semiconductors from Nvidia Corp and plans to construct the massive facility in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

The data center is expected to boast a total capacity of three gigawatts, as revealed by sources familiar with the project, according to Bloomberg News.

This capacity would significantly beat any data center currently in operation worldwide. With this initiative, Reliance joins global tech giants such as Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon, all of whom are heavily investing in AI infrastructure.

While a Reliance spokesperson declined to comment directly on the project, they referred to a recent statement by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd CEO Akash Ambani.

In his speech, Akash Ambani shared the ambitious timeline for the project: “We want to complete it in true Jamnagar style in record time as we have always done in Jamnagar  in 24 months.”

Reliance plans to power this groundbreaking data center entirely with renewable energy. The group is simultaneously developing a sprawling green energy complex over 5,000 acres in Jamnagar.

Which will feature factories producing photovoltaic panels, fuel cell systems, green hydrogen, energy storage units, and wind turbines.

Currently, the world’s largest operational data centers are under one gigawatt in capacity. The largest facilities, mostly located in the United States, are owned by tech heavyweights like Microsoft.

Which operates a data center in Virginia with a capacity of approximately 600 megawatts, along with another 112 MW facility under construction, according to DC Byte.

If realized, the Jamnagar data center would dramatically increase India’s current data center capacity, which stands at less than one gigawatt.

Global demand for data centers is projected to surge, with capacity expected to triple by 2030, reaching an estimated 219 GW annually, according to McKinsey & Co.
