Iran has suspended all of its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), claiming that the United States failed to uphold the agreement, as tensions between the two countries continue to grow.
On Saturday, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Washington had “violated and suspended all its commitments” under the Pakistan-brokered agreement, leaving Tehran with no reason to continue honoring its side of the deal.
“We have also suspended our commitments. We are not implementing them and are focused on defending the country,” Gharibabadi said, according to Iranian media.
He also said that Iran would “never start negotiations with the US under any circumstances”.
The Islamabad MoU, brokered by Pakistan in June, was designed to end the conflict between Iran and the United States and open the door for a long-term peace agreement. However, Iranian officials say repeated violations by the US military have weakened the agreement and disrupted the ceasefire.
Following Gharibabadi’s remarks, Iran has formally suspended its participation in the peace agreement.
