The Punjab government has banned dry sweeping of roads and the use of lime powder during the ongoing smog season, effective immediately and lasting until January 15, 2026.
According to a notification issued by the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the smog season in Punjab has begun and is expected to persist through mid-January, bringing dangerously high levels of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) that threaten both public health and the environment.
The EPA explained that dry sweeping of roads and public spaces releases dust particles that stay suspended in the air, worsening particulate pollution.
When mixed with fog, these pollutants form smog, which reduces visibility and causes respiratory and other health problems. The use of lime powder on roads further increases dust levels, making air quality worse.
To curb pollution, the EPA has directed that “only mechanised and wet sweeping practices shall be employed,” while strictly prohibiting the throwing or spreading of lime powder on roads and open areas.
The notification added that the order is effective immediately and will remain in place until January 15, 2026. Any violations will be punishable under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
