SP Adeel Akbar reportedly shot himself in Islamabad

According to a report, police sources said on Saturday that Superintendent of Police (SP) Adeel Akbar is believed to have accidentally shot himself inside his vehicle in Islamabad.

His medical report and leave application, submitted before his death, have also come to light, providing new details about the case.

The federal government has formed a high-level investigation team to look into the circumstances surrounding his death, which occurred on October 23 after he suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators revealed that officers from the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP) generally do not receive formal training in handling submachine guns (SMGs). Forensic experts found that the SMG used in the incident was fired at a 65-degree angle.

An operator who was accompanying SP Akbar told officials that after returning from the Foreign Office, where the officer had gone to attest his documents, SP Akbar asked for his weapon.

The operator said he initially handed over the gun without the magazine, but later gave the magazine to the officer when he inquired about the number of bullets.

Moments later, a gunshot was heard, striking SP Akbar in the forehead and exiting from the back of his head. The operator said the officer died instantly, though he was immediately taken to PIMS Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.
