University of Lahore student recovering after suicide attempt

Fatima, a student at the University of Lahore who had attempted to take her life by jumping from the second floor of the campus building, was discharged from the hospital on Saturday after undergoing successful surgery, as reported.

She was first admitted to Lahore General Hospital on January 5 and later shifted to the Punjab Institute of Neurosciences, where doctors performed surgery on her spine. After receiving treatment for 12 days, she was declared fit and allowed to return home.

Soon after the incident, the University of Lahore formed a high-level inquiry committee comprising senior faculty members and management officials to investigate the matter.

The 21-year-old D Pharmacy student had been rushed to the hospital with severe fractures in both legs and multiple injuries to other parts of her body.

Police investigations indicated that she took the extreme step due to pressure from her family to continue her D Pharmacy studies, a subject she found difficult.

Investigators collected CCTV footage from cameras installed inside and around the university to reconstruct the sequence of events. The footage is currently under review.

Police said the student had been on a phone call for 27 minutes before the incident and had deleted the record of her last call. Initial findings showed that she arrived at the university in the morning but did not attend her class. She was reportedly distressed after scoring 18 out of 35 in a test, an issue she had discussed with her father and brother.

Further progress in the case will be made after her statement is recorded.
