PDMA Punjab warns of more rainfall, release of water from India

LAHORE: The Director General of PDMA Punjab said on Saturday that the province may see more rainfall, along with the possibility of additional water being released into rivers from India.

Speaking to the media, DG Irfan Kathia warned that flooding in river catchment areas remains a concern, as India may release up to 35,000 cusecs of water into the Ravi River and possibly into the Sutlej as well.

“We are trying to redress the losses in flood-hit areas,” he stated, adding that 5 to 10mm of rainfall is expected in the coming days, which could affect ongoing relief efforts.

He noted that flood victims have begun returning to their homes, while surveys of the damaged areas are underway.

“Flooding in three rivers wreaked havoc in Punjab,” Kathia said, cautioning that more rainfall in the upper regions could increase flows in drains, streams, and the Jhelum River.

The PDMA chief further stated that 11,500 survey workers are currently active in the affected districts, assessing flood losses.
