Veteran bollywood actor Manoj Kumar passes away at 87

Veteran Bollywood actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, known for his memorable roles in classics like Purab Aur Paschim and Kranti, has passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai.

He died early Friday morning due to heart complications, with decompensated liver cirrhosis as a contributing factor, according to his medical certificate from Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani Hospital.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Kumar, calling him a “legendary actor” and national icon, particularly for his patriotic roles that instilled national pride. Kumar’s influential works will continue to inspire future generations, the PM added.

Born in 1937 in Abbottabad, Kumar began his career in 1957 and became widely known through films such as Gumnaam (1965) and Shaheed (1965).

He also directed the acclaimed Shor (1972) and won the Filmfare Award for Best Director in 1975 for Roti Kapada Aur Makaan.

Throughout his career, Kumar earned many prestigious accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1992, the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015.

His passing has left a significant void in the Indian film industry, with tributes pouring in from all corners of the nation.

Union Minister Rajnath Singh described him as a “versatile actor” whose patriotic films enriched Indian culture. Kumar’s legacy in Indian cinema remains secure, continuing to inspire generations.
