Renowned filmmaker Sarmad Khoosat has made a significant decision to unveil his film “Zindagi Tamasha” on YouTube, marking a pivotal moment after years of delays and disputes.
In a recent Instagram video, Khoosat revealed that the complete version of the film will be accessible for free on August 4th. This unconventional release coincides with Pakistan’s Independence Day and serves as Khoosat’s gesture to allow audiences to experience the film, which was banned from cinemas due to controversies.
“Zindagi Tamasha,” Pakistan’s official entry to the 2021 Oscars, garnered accolades after its premiere at the 2019 Busan International Film Festival, where it clinched the esteemed Kim Ji-Seok Award. However, its trajectory was marred by political turmoil, leading to its prohibition in Pakistan following allegations of blasphemy by Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP).
Sarmad Khoosat expressed his exasperation over the film’s unjust treatment, despite adhering to all administrative and legal protocols. As an independent venture without corporate backing, Khoosat had aspired to a conventional theatrical launch. Unfortunately, the barrage of controversies resulted in substantial financial setbacks.
The filmmaker opted to upload the version endorsed by censor boards on YouTube, urging viewers to approach the film with an open mind and evaluate it based on its own merits. Additionally, Khoosat plans to offer a director’s cut on Vimeo through a video-on-demand feature.
While “Zindagi Tamasha” is presented entirely free of charge on YouTube, Khoosat humbly requested patronage for artistic independence and support for his production house through voluntary contributions. He appealed to audiences to respect the film’s authorized distribution channels and refrain from unauthorized downloads through torrents.
Boasting a stellar cast featuring Arif Hassan, Eman Suleman, Samiya Mumtaz, and Ali Kureshi, “Zindagi Tamasha” triumphed over adversity, securing global recognition by clinching the Snow Leopard Award for Best Film at the 6th Asian World Film Festival (AWFF). Sarmad Khoosat’s bold decision to directly engage with the audience through online platforms underscores his commitment to sharing his creation despite the challenges faced.
