Punjab has approved a new mechanism to remove old, damaged, and unsafe vehicles from roads across the province. The initiative is aimed at taking highly polluting and unfit vehicles off the roads and reducing air pollution.
Under the new ordinance, vehicles whose registration has been cancelled or withdrawn will be considered unfit for use. Vehicles that fail to secure the required fitness or emissions certificates will also qualify for scrapping.
Vehicles severely damaged in road accidents, fires or natural disasters may also be declared unfit and sent to scrapping facilities. Owners will also have the option to voluntarily surrender vehicles that are no longer suitable for use.

The provincial government will set up designated vehicle scrapping centres in the public and private sectors. These centres will recover usable parts from old vehicles, while the remaining materials will be processed for recycling.
The new mechanism follows the Punjab governor’s approval of the third major amendment to the Motor Vehicles Ordinance. The amended law has come into effect immediately, while the provincial government will introduce detailed rules to oversee the scrapping process.
Officials said the initiative will help remove smoke-emitting and unsafe vehicles from the roads and contribute to a cleaner environment across Punjab.
