CNG, LPG banned in school vans across Karachi

The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) has directed all affiliated educational institutions to stop the use of CNG and LPG in vehicles used for student transportation.

In a notification issued on August 6, BSEK Secretary Dr Naveed Ahmed instructed school administrations to ensure that transport operators providing pick-up and drop-off services for students follow the directive.

The board warned that vehicles found using CNG or LPG would not be permitted to operate as school transport. Violators may also face fines and have their vehicles impounded. Schools have been asked to regularly inspect transport vehicles and ensure that they comply with relevant laws and court directives.

BSEK has also directed schools to raise awareness among parents, students and transporters about the safety risks linked to CNG and LPG-powered vehicles. Institutions have been advised to highlight incidents such as the Gujrat school van case to reinforce the importance of safe transportation.

The directive comes as authorities in Sindh step up enforcement against the use of LPG and CNG in passenger vehicles. The provincial government has separately ordered strict action against the use of these fuels in school vans and inter-district public transport.

Safety concerns have also been highlighted by research carried out in Karachi, which identified improperly installed CNG cylinders as one of the hazards found in vehicles used for transporting schoolchildren.
