ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has permanently ended the provision of free electricity units for employees working in the power sector, a move officials are calling a significant policy change.
Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari said that the practice of providing free electricity to power sector staff has now been stopped and will not continue in the future.
He welcomed the court’s decision on the matter and described the move as a positive development. He added that this is the first government under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to take what he called a bold step to withdraw this facility.

According to him, ending the supply of free electricity units had been a long-standing demand of the public, and meeting this demand was included in the government’s priorities.
He further said that the government remains focused on taking necessary steps to support economic recovery and promote national development, adding that more decisions would be taken without delay whenever required in the national interest.
