Young Karachi fishmonger goes viral on social media

On a Sunday morning earlier this month, 12-year-old Huzaifa Khan walked through the narrow streets of Karachi’s Frontier Colony. He held a portable microphone while his father pushed a wooden cart filled with fresh fish.

The father-son duo had just returned from the city’s bustling seafood market, ready to sell their catch in neighbourhood markets and through home deliveries. As they made their daily rounds, Khan recorded their conversations.

He shared insights into their lives as fishmongers and small business owners working hard to earn a livelihood on the streets of Karachi. Since February last year, Khan has been posting these videos online.

Through them, he quickly gained popularity. His vlogs on the Khanvlogs240 Instagram page have garnered thousands, sometimes even millions of views. Comment sections are filled with praise and encouragement for him and his father.

With his spectacled appearance and slight speech lisp, Khan’s innocence won him a growing audience, leading to increased fish sales.

“Earlier, my father used to buy fish from here [fish market] and sell it on a cart only, but since online orders started coming in, we now also take fish and deliver it to people’s homes,” Khan told Arab News.

Selling fish is no easy job, especially when juggling school and content creation. Khan starts his day at dawn, offers prayers, attends school, and then joins his father in the afternoon.

On weekends, he helps with early morning trips to the fish market alongside his father and elder brother, Talha Ubaid. He assists with their second evening business, selling French fries from a cart.

Khan’s journey to social media fame began in October 2023 when his family moved to Karachi from a small village in Swat.

His first video, Chhoti Si Dukan (Small Shop), was uploaded in February 2024. Since then, he has shared hundreds of videos across social media platforms, capturing hearts with his dedication and resilience.
