Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, is being solemnly observed across Pakistan today in memory of the immense sacrifices made by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his loyal companions during the Battle of Karbala.
The day commemorates their unwavering commitment to justice and Islam in the face of tyranny.
Mourning processions are underway in cities and towns throughout the country, with participants engaging in traditional rituals to mark the occasion.
Extensive security measures have been put in place nationwide to maintain peace and safety during the processions.
The Ministry of Interior had earlier approved the deployment of the Pakistan Army and Civil Armed Forces to support local law enforcement. In many cities, mobile and internet services have been suspended to prevent any untoward incidents.
Karachi
In Karachi, the main procession began at Nishtar Park following nightlong Majalis and will conclude at Bargah Hussainian Iranian Kharadar later in the evening with Shaam-e-Ghareeban.
MA Jinnah Road has been sealed off, and nearby markets such as Saddar and Empress Market remain closed. Pillion riding has been temporarily banned as part of the security protocol.
Lahore
Lahore’s central procession started from Nisar Haveli in Mochi Gate and will end at Karbala Gamay Shah.
Rawalpindi
In Rawalpindi, the main Zuljanah procession is moving from Imam Bargah Colonel Maqbool Hussain to Qadeemi Imam Bargah.
Over 5,500 police personnel have been deployed across the city on the orders of Commissioner Engineer Aamir Khattak.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif offered heartfelt tributes to Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions.
President Zardari emphasized, “The Day of Ashura is a bright and immortal chapter in Islamic history, which gives us a message of sacrifice, truthfulness and sincere determination.”
He called on the nation to embrace these values and build a society based on honesty, unity, and justice.
He further noted that Karbala was not only a battlefield but a moral test of faith and conviction, where Imam Hussain (RA) chose suffering over submission.
“Their message is still alive today and it is a profound message of standing firm on principles, not bowing down to oppression and coercion and making every sacrifice for the sake of truth.”
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed similar sentiments, stating that the message of Imam Hussain (RA) is timeless and teaches that even though the path of truth is hard, it leads to the ultimate reward, Allah’s pleasure and spiritual fulfillment.
He said Muslims must continue to uphold justice, support the oppressed, and remain steadfast in truth under all circumstances.
