As the nine-day festival of Navratri is celebrated across various regions of India, people are donning their dandiya attire in anticipation of the joyful holiday. It’s worth noting that Gujarat, the birthplace of the folk dances garba and dandiya, holds a special significance in these celebrations.

Member of Parliament, Shashi Tharoor, recently shared a video showcasing a Keralan folk dance that bore a resemblance to dandiya and garba. The video features a group of women, elegantly clad in Kasavu sarees, dancing with sticks. Observers lining the roadside suggest that the video was likely captured during a public procession.

In his post, Tharoor playfully addressed Gujarati sisters, saying, “Attention Gujarati sisters! This Navaratri, savor some Kerala-style dandiya!” This post has already garnered thousands of likes and over 1.4 lakh views.

In Keralan Kolkali dance performances and various other forms of the art, performers make use of small sticks. The southern state of Kerala, particularly the Malabar region, is known for its diverse and popular group dance styles.

Among these, Kolkali dance performed by women is known as Kolattam. The origins of Kolkali can be traced back to ancient times when Kerala’s martial art, Kalarippayattu, was prevalent, as detailed in a blog post on the Kerala Tourism website.
