In a report submitted to the Supreme Court on Monday, it has been outlined that Imran Khan, Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is being accorded a range of comforts during his confinement at Attock jail. This follows his incarceration on August 5 due to his conviction in the Toshakhana case. Prepared by the Attorney General for Pakistan, Mansoor Awan, as directed by the apex court, the report highlights the conditions of Khan’s detention.
Imran Khan is being held in the secure High Observation Block, with adjacent cells intentionally kept vacant. His cell, measuring 9×11 feet, has undergone renovations including whitewashing, plastering, distempering of walls, cementing of the floor, installation of a ceiling fan, and a fiber door. The washroom, measuring 7×4 feet with 6-foot-high walls, has been extended, and the cell walls raised to five feet. The detention area features a branded commode, Muslim shower, tissue stand, and stainless steel tap.
A washbasin with a large mirror has been set up for ablution and washing purposes, and Khan can also use a strolling shed outside his cell. Additionally, for better sleep and comfort, Khan, classified as a “better class prisoner,” has been provided with a mattress, four pillows, table, chair, and a prayer mat. An air cooler contributes to his comfort.
Khan’s amenities extend to intellectual and spiritual engagement, as he has access to the Holy Quran with an English translation, 25 Islamic history books, and a newspaper. He can also watch television on a 21-inch LED set.
Sanitary upkeep is maintained by an assigned worker who cleans Khan’s cell, washroom, and his clothes for two hours daily, using cleaning supplies including phenyl.
The report further outlines Khan’s visitation privileges. As per regulations, his family can visit for two to three hours on Tuesdays, while lawyers are allowed the same duration on Wednesdays. From August 7 to 23, Khan’s lawyers and wife have met him three times each. A medical team of five doctors conducts regular examinations on him.
Khan’s dietary preferences are accommodated with a menu that includes breakfast items like bread, omelette, curd, and tea. Fresh fruits, vegetables, pulses, and rice constitute his lunch and dinner, along with his requested desi chicken twice a week, and occasional desi mutton cooked in ghee.
To ensure his safety and security, 53 jail personnel from Punjab have been temporarily deployed. Inner and outer security has been enhanced, with four jail officials overseeing the confinement cell in each shift. Surveillance is carried out through three cameras in the strolling shed, situated about 12 to 14 feet from Khan’s cell, safeguarding his privacy. No cameras are placed inside the cell, while two are positioned outside the High Observation Block. Communication is facilitated through wireless sets, and an uninterrupted electricity supply is guaranteed through two sources from the Islamabad Electric Supply Company and a 63KV generator connection.
In conclusion, the report underscores the arrangements in place to ensure Imran Khan’s comfort, hygiene, safety, and communication during his confinement in Attock jail as ordered by the Supreme Court.
