Sultan Rahi’s son takes a dig at ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’

The Pakistani film The Legend of Maula Jatt is a remake of Sultan Rahi’s iconic Punjabi movie Maula Jatt, a massive hit worldwide in 1979. The original film was written by Nasir Adeeb, produced by Muhammad Sarwar Bhatti, and directed by Yunus Malik.

Decades later, producers Amarah Hikmat and Bilal Lashari reimagined the story with the same writer, bringing a star-studded remake to the big screen. The modern version was made with Hollywood-style cinematography and became a major commercial success.

Recently, Haider Sultan, the son of legendary actor Sultan Rahi, disapproved of the remake. He criticized aspects of The Legend of Maula Jatt and announced his upcoming project, Son of Maula Jatt.

During a podcast by Ukasha Gul, Haider Sultan shared his views on the film, heavily criticizing the remake.

“The remake didn’t do justice to the original movie, although it was a good production. They filmed it in a Hollywood style, which was a plus point as it boosted their business. I think the character didn’t suit Fawad Khan.

It was a role meant for a strong person, a man of honour and integrity, but Fawad didn’t stand out in the film. Mahira Khan’s character could have been given to an authentic Punjabi Jatti.

Humaima Malick and Hamza Ali Abbasi were brilliant; they performed better than the main leads. The film lost its authenticity due to its attempt to copy Hollywood,” he said.

His remarks sparked debate among fans and critics. While some agreed that the original Maula Jatt had a unique charm that couldn’t be replicated, others appreciated the modernized version for its cinematography and global appeal.

The discussion continues as audiences eagerly anticipate Haider Sultan’s upcoming film.
