In a move to boost tourism, Sri Lanka’s Department of Immigration and Emigration has rolled out a free visa program for citizens from seven nations, effective immediately.
The eligible countries are China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan. This initiative applies to individuals with Diplomatic, Official, Public Affairs, Service, and Ordinary passports from these countries.
Visa Details
Under this program, travelers can enjoy a visa-free stay in Sri Lanka for 30 days, allowing for double entry during this period. This flexibility enables visitors to enter and exit the country twice within the specified timeframe.
Application Process
To avail themselves of this opportunity, applicants must submit their Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) applications online. The ETA application process typically takes about three working days to complete.
Required Documents
Applicants need to provide essential documents, including a valid passport, travel insurance, proof of sufficient funds, and flight bookings. While the payment gateway screen is currently part of the ETA application, the Department of Immigration and Emigration assures its removal soon.
Tracking Visa Status
To ease the process, applicants can conveniently track the status of their ETA applications online.
General Guidelines
It’s crucial to note that this free visa regime is exclusive to nationals from the designated seven countries. Citizens of other nations must adhere to the standard rules and regulations applicable to Sri Lanka’s ETA.
Visa Extension
The free ETA cannot be extended beyond the initial 30-day validity period. However, those requiring an extension can apply for one, subject to the payment of the appropriate fee.
Processing Time and Recommendations
While the typical processing time for ETA applications is around three working days, it is advisable to apply well in advance to prevent potential delays.
Sri Lanka’s new free visa program aims to attract visitors from key nations, offering them a convenient and straightforward process to explore the country for a 30-day period.
