People across the country have voiced their frustration and anger at skyrocketing electricity bills . Some even threatening protests and civil disobedience if the excessive taxes aren’t rolled back. In response, caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar has called for an emergency meeting to address the situation.
The increase in electricity prices has led to widespread protests and discontent. Last month, the national average tariff was raised by around Rs5 per unit. This raise causes the base unit power tariff to jump from Rs24.82 to Rs29.78. On August 22, the government sought to raise the power rate by an additional Rs3.55 per unit.
In the midst of these protests, caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi. Along with Federal Secretary of the Power Division Rashid Mahmood Langrial, held a media briefing in Islamabad to explain the reasons behind the electricity tariff adjustments.
Langrial outlined that the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) determines electricity tariffs through various methodologies. Including additional quarterly tariff adjustments (QTA) and fluctuations based on the Consumer Price Index. He also mentioned that factors like fuel price adjustments and changes in the Karachi Inter-Bank Offered Rate (Kibor rate) play a role in electricity cost fluctuations.
Furthermore, the secretary emphasized that the tariff increases primarily impact consumers using more than 400 units of electricity. He clarified that 63.5% of domestic consumers would see no change in tariffs. For others, the increase varies, with some facing an uptick of up to Rs6.5 per unit.
The press conference occurred against the backdrop of protests across the country. As the citizens struggle to cope with the burden of exorbitant electricity bills. Demonstrators in various cities expressed their anger and frustration. Some threatening to escalate their actions if the situation doesn’t improve.
The surge in electricity costs has triggered concerns among people from all walks of life. As they grapple with the impact on their daily lives and finances. This widespread discontent has prompted urgent calls for the government to address the issue and provide relief to consumers.
Activist Ammar Ali Jan has announced a campaign against high electricity bills in Lahore, urging coordinated action across the country to demand relief for the salaried class and challenge privileges benefiting the elite.
In the midst of this turmoil, K-Electric, clarified that it does not influence the rising prices and taxes, as the electricity system is regulated by Nepra and the power ministry.
In light of the escalating situation, the government is proposing imposition of additional charges to minimize the impact on consumers.
As the nation grapples with the increasing cost of electricity, the pressure remains on the government to find a solution that provides relief to citizens. Also addresses their concerns about the soaring bills.
