During a momentous MoU signing ceremony at the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) of Karachi University (KU), Federal Minister for Information Technology & Telecommunication, Syed Amin Ul Haque, made a groundbreaking revelation. He disclosed that the Telecommunication Sector in Pakistan has successfully attracted a staggering US $7.1 billion in investments, which has resulted in earnings of a billion Rupees.
The event served as the backdrop for the Minister to underline the importance of digitizing Karachi University’s Examination Centre. To ensure its successful implementation, he directed the Member IT and CEO National Information Technology Board to collaborate closely with the KU management.
The highlight of the ceremony was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which paves the way for the establishment of a Health Incubator and Science & Technology Park in ICCBS. This ambitious endeavor, undertaken in collaboration with the Pakistan Software Export Board, aims to bridge the gap between information technology and academia. The Health Incubator is set to provide valuable support to medical start-ups, while the Science & Technology Park will offer students access to the ever-expanding digital world.
Minister Amin Ul Haque proudly acknowledged the revolutionary strides made by his ministry in promoting technology within Pakistan. He emphasized the tremendous potential possessed by the country’s talented youth in the technology sector and underscored the government’s commitment to providing them with abundant opportunities and support.
Moreover, the Ministry of IT & Telecom’s effective utilization of the Universal Service Fund bore fruit as they invested a whopping Rs77.8 billion in 83 projects aimed at providing broadband services in remote areas. This initiative seeks to enhance digital access for the rural population, enabling them to participate more seamlessly in the digital world.
The Minister further highlighted the passage of the smartphone manufacturing bill, which has resulted in the active participation of 28 companies, including tech giants Samsung and Nokia, in the mobile phone production industry in Pakistan.
Notably, Google’s significant contribution to the country’s educational landscape was also celebrated during the ceremony. Google established its office in Pakistan and granted 15,000 scholarships to Pakistani students in the preceding year. Impressively, this number has surged to 45,000 scholarships this year, with an anticipated increase to 450,000 by 2024, further affirming Google’s commitment to empowering the nation’s youth through education.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of notable figures such as Karachi University’s Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, Patron-in-Chief ICCBS Prof. Dr. Atta-Ur-Rehman, ICCBS Director Prof. Dr. M Iqbal Choudhry, CEO of Pakistan Software Export Board Ali Raza, CEO Ignite Asim Shahryar Hussain, and other dignitaries who gathered to celebrate the country’s technological advancements and its promising future in the digital world.
