Muhammad Syrus Sajjad Qazi has taken on the role of Pakistan’s new foreign secretary, succeeding Ambassador Asad Majeed Khan, who retired from the position. The announcement of Qazi’s appointment was made by the Foreign Office. Qazi is regarded as an accomplished diplomat with extensive experience in the field of diplomacy.
With the rank of a Grade-22 officer in the Foreign Service, Qazi has previously served as a special secretary. His educational background includes graduation from King Edward Medical College Lahore. His expertise lies in both bilateral and multilateral diplomacy, making him well-equipped for his new role.
Qazi’s career has seen him hold significant positions in the past. His appointment as the foreign secretary is expected to extend until 2025. The decision to appoint Qazi was endorsed by the former government under the leadership of Shehbaz Sharif.
The preceding foreign secretary, Asad Majeed, gained attention during his tenure as the Pakistani envoy to the US. He sent a confidential message after a meeting with a senior US official. This document, known as a cipher, was later utilized by former Prime Minister Imran Khan as evidence of an alleged foreign conspiracy against his government.
