- The government has also requested an increase in the basic KE tariff .
The federal government has submitted two requests to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), seeking an uptick in electricity rates for consumers of Karachi Electric.
The government has applied for authorization to recoup up to Rs4.45 per unit from Karachi consumers to cover the second quarter’s fuel cost adjustment in the fiscal year 2022-23. If Nepra approves, this amount will be collected under the tariff rationalization surcharge category.
In a separate application, the government has furnished policy guidelines to Nepra and is asking for an increase in the basic KE tariff.
This revised rate will be reflected in the bills for September, October, and November. Additionally, the government has requested Nepra to establish a distinct tariff schedule for K-Electric. Nepra is scheduled to deliberate on these petitions on September 11.
These appeals to revise electricity prices coincide with ongoing protests in various cities, including Karachi, expressing dissatisfaction with the high electricity tariffs.
