Islamabad, Pakistan – The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is reportedly considering a potential increase in power tariffs for K-Electric consumers by Rs10.32 per unit. This proposed increase is based on three separate fuel adjustments, as reported by ARY News on Monday.
The government has formally submitted a request to NEPRA for tariff adjustments covering three distinct periods: October to December 2022-23, July to September 2022 for K-Electric, and April to June. Collectively, the government has sought a Rs10.32 per unit tariff hike from NEPRA. The power regulator is scheduled to review the government’s request on September 11.
It is important to note that citizens from various walks of life have been expressing their dissatisfaction with the high electricity tariffs, spanning from Karachi to Khyber.
In response to these concerns, Jamaat-e-Islami has announced plans to stage protest sit-ins at governor houses across all four provinces, opposing the inflated electricity bills. “We will organize sit-ins in front of governor houses in all four provinces and initiate a wheel-jam strike in collaboration with traders and transportation sectors if the government does not take steps to reduce electricity bills,” said JI Ameer Sirajul Haq during a media interaction.
He expressed gratitude to traders and the public for their support during a recent successful strike, highlighting that it sends a clear message that the people are unwilling to accept agreements made by previous governments.
