In a surprising medical case in Sadiqabad, doctors performed surgery on a 10-month-old girl to remove an abdominal tumor and ascites, only to discover an astonishing revelation—an undeveloped twin inside her abdomen.
Prof Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed, a pediatric surgeon at Shaikh Zayed Medical College Hospital, revealed that the young child had been referred to the hospital with a pre-abdominal and abdominal mass. The subsequent surgical procedure aimed to remove this internal lump.
Dr. Ahmed went on to explain that this rare condition is known as “fetus-in-fetu” (FIF) within the medical community and is an exceptionally uncommon congenital anomaly. Fetus-in-fetu occurs when a parasitic and malformed fetus develops inside the body of its twin.
This anomaly was first characterized by Meckel in the early nineteenth century. Remarkably, there have been only around 200 documented cases of this abnormality worldwide, translating to roughly one case per 500,000 births.
