- Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) released a commemorative video to celebrate the nation’s Independence Day.
- The omission of former World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan, a cricketing legend and one of Pakistan’s greatest cricketers.
- Imran Khan’s exclusion has been interpreted as a political act rather than an oversight.
In a surprising turn of events, a recent Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) commemorative video released to celebrate the nation’s Independence Day on August 14 has stirred up controversy by omitting the iconic former World Cup-winning captain, Imran Khan. The video, designed to highlight the memorable moments in Pakistani cricket history since its international debut in 1952, has sparked outrage among cricket enthusiasts and fans.
Imran Khan is widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers Pakistan has produced. His exceptional record includes 362 Test wickets at an average of 22.81 and 3,807 runs at an average of 37.69, including six centuries. His remarkable performance during the 1980s secured him a place as the third-best bowler in the ICC’s All-Time Test Bowling Rankings. The pinnacle of his cricket career arrived in 1992 when he led Pakistan to an unexpected victory in the World Cup, famously known for his inspiring “cornered tigers” speech. This victory remained Pakistan’s sole ICC silverware until 2009.
Despite Khan’s monumental contributions to Pakistani cricket, the tribute video conspicuously omitted his presence. Images of the 1992 World Cup triumph were notably devoid of the captain who led Pakistan to victory. This omission has triggered a heated response on social media, with many labeling it a political act rather than a simple oversight.
Khan transitioned from cricket to politics after retiring, founding the anti-establishment political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). In 2018, he became the Prime Minister of Pakistan, a role he held for four years until his removal following a successful National Assembly vote of no-confidence in 2022. Khan’s subsequent legal troubles, including charges of corruption and inaccurately reporting gifts from foreign dignitaries, led to a three-year prison sentence and a five-year ban from holding public office.

Khan’s legal team has contested his conviction, claiming bias and lack of proper legal procedure. Presently, he remains in custody near Islamabad, awaiting an appeal scheduled to commence in the nation’s High Court on August 16.
Prominent cricket journalists and analysts expressed their displeasure at Khan’s exclusion. They viewed it as a disregard for democratic ideals and an affront to the legacy of a cricketing legend. Cricket journalist Farid Khan criticized the move, while Rizwan Haider deemed it reflective of a lack of democracy in the country. Cricket writers Osman Samiuddin and Danyal Rasool expressed sarcastic disbelief at the PCB’s decision, emphasizing that celebrating Pakistani cricket without Imran Khan was inconceivable.
Urooj Mumtaz Khan, former captain of Pakistan’s women’s cricket team, voiced incredulity at the oversight, emphasizing that Khan’s contributions to the sport have secured his position as one of the greatest cricketers globally.
