Huawei continues its recent trend of unexpected smartphone releases with the announcement of the Mate X5. Serving as the direct successor to the Mate X3, the Mate X5 brings significant under-the-hood improvements while retaining its familiar design.
The Mate X5 features the same 7.85-inch LTPO OLED primary display (2,224 x 2,496 px) and 6.4-inch LTPO OLED cover display (1,080 x 2,504px) with Kunlun Glass protection. The exterior is now available in a new Phantom Purple color, joining the existing Feather White, Feather Black, Feather Gold, and Green Mountain options from the Mate X3.
While the camera island on the back has undergone slight design changes, the camera setup remains unchanged, with a 50MP main camera, a 13MP ultrawide unit, and a 12MP periscope module with 5x optical zoom.
The Mate X5 offers up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. Although the official chipset information hasn’t been confirmed, reports suggest it may feature the Kirin 9000s SoC, a 5G-capable chip built on SMIC’s 7nm process technology, similar to the Mate 60 series.
An exciting addition is the new antenna design, featuring Huawei’s Lingxi antenna with AI-driven optimization for improved signal reception. The device’s frame also incorporates dual-mode tuning technology for enhanced signal quality.
Mate X5 packs a larger 5,060 mAh battery with 66W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and 7.5W reverse wireless charging support. It runs HarmonyOS 4 and introduces air gesture controls for hands-free browsing of videos, webpages, and images on the main display. The phone is also IPX8 waterproof and supports two-way BeiDou satellite messaging in China.
Pre-sales for the Huawei Mate X5 are currently available on VMall, with open sales expected to commence on September 15.
