Nephew of former Prime Minister Imran Khan allegedly arrested in Abbottabad for evading capture. According to sources, Hassan Niazi, a lawyer, was apprehended from a friend’s residence where he had been hiding to avoid arrest. His detention coincides with a crackdown on the former ruling party, PTI, following May 9 violence involving attacks on public and private sites, including Jinnah House.
Hassan Niazi, a human rights activist, is wed to the daughter of the Khan of Oghi. A court recently began the process of declaring Imran Khan’s sisters and Niazi as proclaimed offenders in connection to the Jinnah House attack.
The historic Jinnah House, also known as Corps Commander House, was vandalized and set ablaze by PTI supporters after the arrest of Imran Khan on May 9. The arrest sparked widespread protests and extensive damage to government buildings, military installations, and vehicles.
The law enforcement agencies have detained over 10,000 PTI workers, with 4,000 from Punjab province alone. Khan himself is facing around 150 cases, including those related to attacks on military sites. He is currently serving a three-year prison sentence for corruption in the Toshakhana case.
