Every year, on Muharram 15 (August 2), the Ghusl-e-Kaaba ceremony occurs at Masjid al-Haram in Saudi Arabia after the Fajr prayers. The individual entrusted with performing this practice is Prince Khalid al-Faisal, the Governor of Makkah.
During the ceremony, Prince Khalid employs a special mixture of Zamzam water and rose water to wash the interior of the Holy Kaaba. Following the Ghusl-e-Kaaba, he also participates in Tawaaf, an integral part of the sacred ritual.
This age-old tradition of cleansing the Kaaba has its roots in the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is believed that the Prophet used to wash the Kaaba twice a year, once in Muharram and the other before the beginning of Ramadan.
