The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore suffered a terrible collapse early Tuesday when a large container ship collided with one of its columns, sending vehicles and individuals falling into the Patapsco River below.

The aftermath prompted a swift response from emergency services, with Fire Chief James Wallace describing it as an “active search and rescue” operation. While two people have been rescued, there are fears for the safety of others, with the potential for up to seven individuals still unaccounted for.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore swiftly declared a state of emergency, mobilizing interagency efforts and federal resources to aid in the rescue and recovery mission.

The vessel involved, the Dali, was en route to Sri Lanka when the collision occurred. Witnesses described the collapse as seismic, with the impact reverberating through nearby homes.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott and Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. urged prayers and support for those affected.

Meanwhile, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg pledged federal assistance and advised local residents to follow detours and responder guidance due to the closure of all lanes on the bridge.

The collapse not only affects local traffic but also disrupts shipping operations in the region. The Francis Scott Key Bridge, a critical link over the Patapsco River, has been a vital road since its opening in 1977, serving thousands of commuters daily.
