Pakistan’s beloved actor Fawad Khan is all set to return to Bollywood with a romantic movie titled ‘Abir Gulaal’, where he stars alongside Indian actress Vaani Kapoor.
The film, which was announced last year, gave fans a sneak peek through a teaser released on April 1.
‘Abir Gulaal’ is scheduled to hit cinemas on May 9. Fans of the Pakistani star were thrilled to see the teaser, which shows Fawad and Vaani sharing a moment in a car, enjoying the classic song “Kucha Na Kaho” from the film “1942: A Love Story.”

Vaani Kapoor posted the teaser on her Instagram, writing: “The wait is over! Bringing love back to the big screen with Abir Gulaal and @fawadkhan81. A Richer lens film @aricherlens. See you in the cinemas on 9th May!” along with a magic wand and heart emoji.
However, the film’s release is facing controversy. This marks Fawad’s first Bollywood appearance since his role in Karan Johar’s “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” in 2016.
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), a political group based in Mumbai and led by Raj Thackeray, has opposed the film’s release in Maharashtra.
MNS spokesperson Ameya Khopkar reacted strongly to the teaser’s release and stated that the party will not allow the film to be screened in the state.
“The film Abir Gulal will not be allowed to release in India, period. Those who wish to support Pakistani artists can do so, but remember, you are up against us,” the spokesperson posted on X.
Fawad Khan, along with other Pakistani artists, has been away from Indian cinema following an unofficial ban imposed after the 2016 Uri attack.
At the time, the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) passed a resolution advising against working with Pakistani talent.
However, in 2023, the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition that called for a formal ban on Pakistani artists, lifting any official legal barriers to such collaborations.
