Faiza Hasan challenges toxic nationalism in viral post

Faiza Hasan is a Pakistani actress known for her complex performances. She sparked a national debate over role of celebrities during wartime. Many public figures rushed to express solidarity following India’s nighttime missile strikes.

Hasan took a different stance. She defended those who chose silence. Hasan argued that shaming artists for not posting patriotic slogans or hashtags mirrors the same brand of extremist nationalism that Pakistan regularly condemns in India’s BJP led politics.

She claimed that genuine patriotism stems from action, not performance. “Those who live, work, and pay taxes in Pakistan contribute far more to the country than a trending tweet,” she said.

Hasan didn’t stop there. She accused some entertainers of indulging in “vulture-like” virtue signalling, benefiting from others silence to boost their public standing. Though she refrained from naming names, her remarks referenced criticism.

Prominent celebrities like Fawad Khan, Atif Aslam, and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan faced online backlash for their restrained public responses during the military escalation. Her comments struck a nerve with the people.

Social media quickly erupted with divided opinions. Supporters praised her for exposing what they saw as the hypocrisy of performative patriotism. At the same time, critics accused her of downplaying the moral responsibility that public figures bear in moments of national crisis.

“Look at India,” one commenter wrote. “Their celebrities rallied behind Operation Sindoor within hours, unified and unapologetic. Meanwhile, we’re still debating the ethics of a hashtag.”

The controversy exposed a deeper fault line within Pakistan’s entertainment industry. Does visibility come with a duty to speak, or is true loyalty measured in quiet, consistent service?

Should cultural icons take visible public stands to rally national unity, or does authentic patriotism thrive in private contributions and lived experience? Hasan’s intervention challenged long held assumptions about fame and nationalism.

It spotlighted the delicate balance between personal freedom and public expectation. At a time when emotions run high and unity feels essential, her remarks reopened an urgent and unresolved conversation about the cost and meaning of silence.
