Dubai has taken a significant step towards enhancing road safety by introducing 14 AI-powered pedestrian crossings in the bustling Dubai Silicon Oasis. These innovative crossings utilize artificial intelligence to activate warning signs and traffic signals for vehicles as pedestrians and cyclists make their way across the roads.
The project is a result of a fruitful collaboration between Dubai and AI traffic tech developer, Derq, aligning perfectly with the city’s vision of becoming a smart metropolis. After undergoing two years of rigorous testing, the Real-Time Perception and Connectivity AI Platform has finally been put into action, demonstrating its potential to revolutionize pedestrian safety.
Georges Auoude, one of Derq’s co-founders, expressed his delight in the project’s seamless integration with Dubai’s cyclist-friendly objectives. Muammar Al Katheeri, representing the Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority, also hailed the progress achieved in enhancing pedestrian safety through this groundbreaking partnership with Derq.
The core functionality of the AI system lies in its ability to detect vehicles and accurately track their movements, thereby providing drivers with ample time to slow down and exercise caution when approaching pedestrian crossings.
Moreover, the system allows for customization of alerts and durations, enabling them to remain active for a predefined crossing time or until pedestrians have safely crossed the roads.
To ensure efficient operations and data gathering, the AI-powered platform is equipped with high-speed 5G technology, enabling real-time traffic data collection and remote management.
The commitment to road safety extends beyond Dubai, with the UAE launching the “Salamah 365” project to address various safety concerns, including accidents, floods, and pedestrian safety.
As part of this initiative, interactive warnings will be deployed on accident-prone routes, while dam and valley flood monitoring will be carried out to mitigate potential hazards effectively.
In another remarkable safety measure, the Abu Dhabi Police has introduced solar-powered road alerts, equipped with colored lights visible from a distance of up to 200 meters.
These vibrant lights serve as indicators, with blue and red lights signifying incidents and yellow indicating adverse weather conditions. The solar-powered alerts are designed to enhance safety round-the-clock, providing clear and easily discernible signals for drivers.
These initiatives demonstrate the UAE’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of its residents and visitors alike. By harnessing the power of cutting-edge technologies like AI and 5G, Dubai and other cities in the UAE are setting new standards in road safety and striving towards becoming global leaders in smart city development.
With these innovative measures in place, both pedestrians and drivers can rest assured that their journeys will be safer and more secure than ever before.
