Ashley Greene recently opened up about her mental health struggles, shedding light on the challenges she faced during the promotion of the iconic Twilight movie series. In a candid interview with Us Weekly, the actress, best known for her role as Alice Cullen, the beloved vampire character, shared that she initially didn’t recognize the signs of her mental health issues until she started experiencing panic attacks.
Greene, who is now 36, revealed, “I didn’t recognize negative self-talk or intrusive thoughts until much later. But the panic attacks, as soon as I had my first one, I thought I was going to die.”
Her first encounter with a panic attack occurred during the press tour for Twilight, a time when she was already feeling the pressure. She described feeling “terrified” during that period and admitted that she couldn’t simply ignore or suppress these overwhelming feelings, despite her ability to do so in the past to focus on her work.
Interestingly, Greene mentioned that the panic attacks never struck her while she was on set, during photoshoots, or in interviews. Instead, they would manifest when she was alone and had a moment to slow down and reflect.
In her journey toward recovery, she recognized the need for a change in her life and sought treatment. Until then, work had always been a source of happiness for her, providing a way to avoid dealing with her underlying issues and emotions.
Although some of her coping mechanisms inadvertently heightened her anxiety, she credited her shift in lifestyle and the unwavering support of her husband, Paul Khoury, as crucial elements in her healing process. Ashley Greene and Paul Khoury tied the knot in July 2018, and they welcomed their daughter, Kingsley, in September 2022.
She expressed her gratitude for her husband’s role in her mental health journey, emphasizing how significant his support has been in helping her overcome these challenges.
