Apple has reportedly called off its plans to create an electric car, a project that has been in the works for years.
The team working on the car, consisting of around 2,000 members, was informed of this decision by Apple’s COO Jeff Williams and VP Kevin Lynch. Some team members will be transferred to other divisions, while others might face job cuts.
Although Apple never officially confirmed its car project, rumors about it have circulated since 2015 under the code name Titan.
The project experienced various setbacks over the years, including executive departures and reports of scaling back.
Moreover, it was involved in a case of corporate intelligence, when a former engineer was convicted of stealing project information.
Just last month, there were reports that Apple had shifted its focus from a fully autonomous vehicle to a simpler electric car, aiming for a launch in 2028.
However, now it appears Apple has decided to abandon the car project altogether to concentrate on catching up with competitors in developing generative AI services.
