Maryam Nawaz approves expansion of model village project

LAHORE: Maryam Nawaz Sharif has given in principle approval to upgrade 7,500 villages into model villages under the second phase of the Model Village Project.

While chairing a review meeting on rural development and clean water projects, the chief minister instructed officials to set clear timelines for completion and provide before and after videos of each village to show progress.

She also set a deadline of June 30 to clear stagnant wastewater ponds in villages. A helpline (1336) has been launched to quickly address complaints and faults in water filtration plants.

Maryam Nawaz directed that bottling plants in Khushab and Chishtian be completed without delay. She also ordered completion of the cluster based water supply scheme in Rajanpur by May 15.

She emphasized the immediate repair and restoration of non functional water filtration plants, saying safe drinking water must be ensured for all citizens, especially in underdeveloped and polluted areas.

“Negligence in the repair and restoration of water filtration plants will not be tolerated. Access to clean drinking water is the right of every citizen of Punjab,” she said.

Officials briefed that Phase I work on 485 villages is moving ahead quickly at a cost of over Rs59 billion. Each model village will include clean water systems, solar powered tube wells, drainage facilities, and cleaned wastewater ponds.

The chief minister also set August 31 as the deadline for completing septic tanks, which will later be used to reuse water for irrigation after treatment. Officials confirmed that helpline 1336 is fully active to handle public complaints related to water filtration plants.
