Night load shedding returns in Pakistan due to electricity shortfall

The Power Division has stated that electricity shortfalls increased during night hours after hydel power generation dropped by 1,991 megawatts, leading distribution companies to carry out load management beyond the scheduled plan.

A spokesperson for the ministry said the total shortfall during peak night hours reached around 4,500 megawatts, while overall demand was about 18,000 megawatts.

The division explained that the decrease in hydel generation was due to reduced water releases from dams to the provinces, as water demand has stayed lower than last year.

It further said that the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) is releasing water from reservoirs based on provincial requirements, which have remained low because of recent rains and the ongoing crop harvesting period.

The spokesperson added that load management is currently limited to night hours only, with no electricity shortfall during the daytime.

Officials expect the situation to improve in the coming days as increased water releases from dams are likely to boost hydel generation. The Power Division also said that RLNG based power supply will further help improve the overall electricity situation.
