Punjab govt likely to announce school holidays until April 15

The Punjab government has started preparing a set of major measures to address the ongoing energy crisis in the country, which is reportedly linked to rising tensions in Gulf states.

According to sources, the Punjab Energy Department has submitted new recommendations to the provincial government. These include a proposal for fuel rationing similar to measures being considered at the federal level.

The recommendations also suggest extending holidays in schools and other educational institutions until April 15 and introducing a hybrid learning system to reduce energy use.

Sources added that officials are considering a coupon-based or digital system to ensure fair distribution of petrol and diesel. There is also a proposal to allow fuel supply to vehicles on selected days only.

The plan includes issuing strict work-from-home directives for private offices and imposing a complete ban on non-essential events to conserve energy.

Additionally, the government has been advised to improve public transport services, including metro and bus operations, to reduce the dependence on private vehicles. Other proposals include turning off LED billboards and decorative lighting, switching streetlights to alternative modes after 10 PM, and further restricting market operating hours.

These measures are still under review and are expected to be finalized in the coming days as authorities work to manage the growing energy shortfall.
