KP govt introduces pink bus service for women

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has announced that 10 dedicated Pink buses for women will be introduced in the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system as part of the provincial government’s plan to improve public transport and make travel safer for female passengers.

The announcement was made during a press conference in Peshawar. The chief minister said the BRT fleet will be expanded with the addition of 140 new buses, out of which 10 will be reserved exclusively for women and will operate as “Pink buses.”

The move is aimed at offering women a safe, comfortable, and harassment-free travel option in the provincial capital and nearby areas.

Afridi said the additional buses will help ease overcrowding in the BRT system while ensuring women have access to secure and dependable public transport.

Officials believe the initiative will encourage more women to use public transport for education, work and everyday travel.

The BRT network in Peshawar, run by TransPeshawar, is currently one of the most widely used urban transport systems in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and serves thousands of passengers every day. Authorities say the new buses will improve service frequency and make commuting more convenient.

During the briefing, the chief minister also announced several relief measures for the public amid rising fuel prices. These include keeping BRT fares unchanged despite the recent increase in petrol prices and offering financial relief to motorcycle users across the province.

Afridi said the government is working on several initiatives to improve public transport, assist low-income commuters and support women’s mobility throughout the province.
