US Embassy in Islamabad suspends visa appointments nationwide

The United States Embassy in Islamabad has released a heightened security advisory for American citizens in Pakistan following growing unrest and violent protests near the US Consulate in Karachi.

The embassy said demonstrations are continuing in several cities and urged US nationals to remain cautious and stay updated on the situation. In a statement shared on X, the mission said it was “monitoring reports of ongoing demonstrations at the US Consulates General in Karachi and Lahore, as well as calls for additional protests at the US Embassy in Islamabad and the US Consulate in Peshawar.”

Americans were advised to stay alert, avoid large gatherings and crowded public areas, and ensure their Smart Traveler Enrollment Program registrations are up to date so they can receive timely alerts.

Due to the unrest, the embassy cancelled all visa appointments and in-person American Citizen Services scheduled for March 2 at its diplomatic offices in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar. Applicants were told to keep checking official embassy platforms for information about new appointment dates.

The advisory follows violent clashes on March 1, 2026, when large groups gathered outside the US Consulate in Karachi amid heightened regional tensions linked to recent geopolitical developments.

According to hospital and police officials, at least nine people lost their lives and dozens more were injured during confrontations between protesters and law enforcement.

As a precaution, all US government personnel in Pakistan have been directed to limit their movement until further notice in response to the rising tensions.
