The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has decided to end the supply of water through tankers and hydrants across the city.
During a meeting on Tuesday, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab instructed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation to work on an alternative system that would provide water through pipelines. He also ordered the phased shutdown of all seven hydrants currently operating in Karachi.
The mayor said that residents would receive water through proper pipeline connections and directed officials to make arrangements for doorstep delivery through established lines.
He noted that the city earns about Rs300 million each month from hydrants, but confirmed that the hydrant contracts expired last year and will not be renewed.
Murtaza Wahab announced that the tanker-based water supply system will be discontinued. He added that until the pipeline network is fully in place, water should be provided to different areas on alternate days.
