Nearly 1,000 people bitten by dogs in Karachi in first week of 2026

Dog bite cases in Karachi have surged to worrying levels, with around 850 people reported to have been bitten in just the first five days of 2026.

Hospital records show that Indus Hospital in Korangi alone treated 300 new dog bite patients during this period, while Civil and Jinnah Hospitals reported over 300 additional cases.

Dr. Aftab Goher, who oversees the Dog Bite Clinic, said that the majority of cases were coming from areas including Korangi, Hub Chowki, Baldia, Landhi, and Gadap.

In one severe case, a 41-year-old patient at Indus Hospital had to undergo amputation of a finger due to infection caused by a dog bite.

Dr. Goher emphasized that “rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear” and advised the public to seek immediate medical care and vaccination following any dog bite.

The recent spike in cases underscores the urgent need for public awareness, timely vaccinations, and other preventive measures to control the spread of rabies in Karachi.
