India alerts Pakistan to deadly flood risk under IWT

India has officially warned Pakistan of possible heavy flooding under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). The alert, concerning the Tawi River near Jammu, was shared with Islamabad on August 24 at 10:00 AM through official treaty channels.

The move comes even after India had earlier announced the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. Despite that declaration, officials confirmed that the Indian High Commission in Islamabad still passed on the warning to Pakistani authorities.

In April, New Delhi had not only declared the treaty suspended but also ordered Pakistani nationals in India to leave within 48 hours, closed the Attari and Wagah border crossings, and revoked the SAARC visa exemption facility for Pakistani citizens.

It is important to note that Pakistan had taken India’s construction of water reservoirs on western rivers to the Court of Arbitration in 2016, while India wanted the appointment of a neutral expert in response.
