PDMA warns of more rain as monsoon intensifies in Punjab

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a new update on the ongoing monsoon season as rainfall continues across several parts of Punjab, according to a report.

A spokesperson for the PDMA shared that Sheikhupura has seen the most rain so far, with 48 millimetres recorded. Lahore followed with 40 millimetres.

Other cities experienced lighter showers. Gujranwala received 6 millimetres, Murree had 5, Faisalabad saw 4, Sialkot recorded 2, and Mandi Bahauddin reported just 1 millimetre.

Rain was also reported in Attock, Toba Tek Singh, Bahawalnagar, Kasur, and Bahawalpur, signaling a widespread shift in the province’s weather.

Director General of PDMA, Irfan Ali Kathia, mentioned that the current spell of rain is expected to continue through tomorrow. He also warned that heavier rainfall could hit several areas of Punjab in the next 24 hours.

He urged residents to remain careful, as worsening weather could increase risks.

In view of this, the PDMA chief advised people to avoid going outdoors during lightning or thunderstorms. He also cautioned against staying in unstable or damaged buildings, particularly in rural areas, as heavy rains could lead to structural collapses.

The PDMA is keeping close contact with district authorities and continues to watch the situation carefully to respond quickly where needed.

Earlier, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif instructed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), local rescue teams, and administrative departments to stay on high alert during the ongoing heavy rainfall and be prepared for any emergency situations.

The prime minister also directed that, in view of possible flooding along the Indus and other rivers, the NDMA and concerned agencies should immediately begin taking safety and preventive steps.

He further ordered the NDMA to enhance coordination with provincial authorities to better manage any flood-related emergencies.
