Sugar prices have seen a sharp rise over the past week, with both wholesale and retail markets reporting noticeable hikes, according to a report on Tuesday.
In Karachi, the wholesale rate has gone up from Rs173 to Rs175 per kilogram. On the retail side, prices have increased by Rs5 to Rs10, with sugar now being sold at rates ranging between Rs185 and Rs190 per kilogram.
Market traders point to a gap between supply and demand as the reason behind the surge. “The imbalance between sales and purchases has pushed prices upward,” one wholesaler stated.
In Lahore, the trend is similar, where a 50-kilogram bag of sugar is now priced at Rs8,950, reflecting the consistent climb in rates across the province.
So far, there has been no official response or action from the Punjab government, sparking concerns that inflation on essential items may worsen in the near future.
