KARACHI: Despite a ban under Section 144 on sea bathing, large crowds gathered at Hawkes Bay and Sands Pit beaches, openly disregarding safety warnings and venturing into the rough waters.
From the early hours, people of all ages, including families and adventurous youth, flocked to the coastline, turning it into a recreational spot.
Many were seen swimming in the sea, ignoring lifeguards’ repeated cautions about the hazardous six-foot-high tides, especially the dangerous undercurrents during the pullback.
At Sands Pit, police presence was minimal, and enforcement of the ban appeared ineffective. Food vendors and stalls continued operating freely along the shore, adding to the influx of visitors.
Tragedy struck when 22-year-old Saqib Ali drowned while swimming near Sands Pit on Sunday. According to ASI Zulqarnain, Saqib and his two friends were swept away by strong currents.
Though a nearby lifeguard rescued all three, Saqib was in critical condition and died after being taken to the hospital.
