Careem to end ride-hailing services in Pakistan by July 2025

Careem has officially announced that it will be ending its ride-hailing services in Pakistan on July 18, 2025, bringing an end to nearly a decade of operations in one of its most active markets.

In a message to users, the company thanked customers for their continued support over the years and admitted the decision was not easy.

Careem assured users that those with money left in their Careem Wallets will soon receive clear instructions on how to withdraw their funds.

“If you have a remaining balance in your Careem Wallet, we’ll be in touch soon with clear instructions on how to reclaim it.

Careem Care will remain available until 18th September 2025, to help you with any pending issues or questions you may have,” the statement said.

Their customer service, known as “Careem Care,” will continue to assist users until September 18, 2025.

The company is exiting Pakistan’s ride-hailing space due to tough competition from rivals like Yango and inDrive, which have gained a strong foothold in the market.

These platforms have made it difficult for Careem to maintain a competitive edge, ultimately leading to the decision to shut down this part of its business. Careem still operates in nine other countries.

Mudassir Sheikha, Careem’s Co-founder and CEO, shared his thoughts on LinkedIn, calling it an incredibly tough choice.

“The challenging macroeconomic reality, intensifying competition, and global capital allocation made it hard to justify the investment levels required to deliver a safe and dependable service in the country. In the end, the Careem Rides team had to make this tough call,” he wrote.

Careem launched in Pakistan in 2016, starting its services in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, just as mobile internet was becoming more accessible through 3G and 4G networks.

Although the ride-hailing service is coming to a close, Careem’s presence in Pakistan isn’t ending entirely. The company’s tech division, Careem Technologies, will continue working from Pakistan to support its broader operations across the region, the CEO added.
