Met Office warns of extreme heatwave across Pakistan from today

The Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert across the country from June 9 to June 12, citing the development of a high-pressure system over the region.

Temperatures are expected to soar 5 to 7°C above normal in central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan during this period.

In upper and central Sindh, southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan, the rise is likely to be between 4 to 6°C above the seasonal average.

Due to intense heat, dust storms and gusty winds are anticipated in the country’s plains, as noted by the Met Office.

The general public, particularly children, the elderly, and women, are urged to take necessary precautions in view of the expected extreme heat.

Citizens have been advised to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours and to stay well-hydrated throughout the day.

The rising temperatures may also accelerate the rate of snowmelt in northern regions during this spell.

On Sunday, the weather remained hot and dry across most of the country, with extremely high temperatures recorded in the plains.

Jacobabad hit 50°C, Dadu and Sibi recorded 49°C, while Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, and Shaheed Benazirabad each saw highs of 47°C.
