Karachi expected to sizzle at 40°C today

Karachi is bracing for intense heat, with temperatures expected to peak between 39°C and 40°C on Sunday, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The Met office noted that winds from the west and southwest are likely over the next 24 hours, with speeds ranging between 15 and 45 kilometres per hour.

Karachi recorded a minimum temperature of 31°C earlier this morning, while highs are forecast to stay between 37°C and 40°C, the department added.

Elsewhere, the PMD predicted predominantly hot and dry weather across most of the country for the next twelve hours.

However, isolated areas in Kashmir and upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa may see partly cloudy skies with possible rain and thundershowers.

Morning temperatures in major cities were recorded as follows: Islamabad 18°C, Lahore 24°C, Peshawar 23°C, Quetta 25°C, Gilgit 17°C, Murree 12°C, and Muzaffarabad 19°C.

Meanwhile, violent storms wreaked havoc in Punjab on Saturday, leaving at least 14 people dead and over 92 injured, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). Most casualties were due to collapsing structures and flying debris.

Flights at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport faced delays, cancellations, and diversions, while LESCO declared a red alert amid widespread power disruptions.

In Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the storm brought relief from a long-running heatwave, accompanied by rain, hail, and a significant drop in temperatures. Rawalpindi authorities declared a rain emergency in response.
